Changemakers Rotary Club

President's January Message
My fellow Changemakers, we are starting the second half of the 2025-2026 Rotary Year.  Now is the time to step up and get involved in our club!  I am pleased to announce that Julie Zillmer is our President-Elect, who will be president in 2026-27.  We are still looking for a Treasurer, a co-chair of the service committee, a President Nominee who will be president in 2027-2028, and those interested in forming new committees.  We always welcome your suggestions for our monthly guest speakers.

Sydney Widell from the Coon Creek Community Watershed Council is our guest speaker on January 2nd.  Invite your family and friends to join our monthly Zoom meeting at 8 am.  And, join us for fellowship at 7:30. (Rotary International causes: Providing Clean Water and Protecting the Environment)

We still need a speaker for February 6th; please let me know if you have someone that you could invite. Our March speaker will be Ben Stanger, CEO and Founder of Green Box Compost in Sun Prairie.  I have a Green Box Subscription and every other week my compost box is picked up and a new box is delivered for me to fill up.  My statistics so far are 394 pounds diverted from the landfill, 390 driving miles offset, 2.6 seedlings planted, and 17 gallons of gas offset by diverting food scraps from the landfill. (Rotary International cause:  Protecting the Environment)  Bonus!  I get five gallons of composted matter twice a year to add to my flower beds, AKA Pollinator garden.

Please join me and all of your fellow Changemakers in making this second half of the Rotary year a great one!

Other ongoing projects we are following include the Ukrainian Refugee School  Viktoria Vita Griessmuller, the refugee school project coordinator, has been recognized as a 40 under 40 Business Elite Europe awardee.  Congratulations to Viktoria.   Operation Pollination is taking a seasonal break.

We are still looking for a speaker for the February 6th meeting.  If you have any ideas, let Sharon or Val know.

Our March 6th speaker will be Ben Stanger, CEO and Founder of Green Box Compost.  This matches the Rotary focus of protecting the environment.

Sydney Widell from the Coon Creek Community Watershed Council was our January speaker.  Their mission is to continue the historic legacy of conservation through improving and restoring our soil, water, and air as stewards of the Coon Creek Watershed.  They focus on strategies and practices that individuals can implement.  https://cooncreekwatershed.org/  This coincides with Rotary International causes of providing clean water and protecting the environment.

Watch the meeting recording for the full presentation.  Ideas - Learn about your own watershed.  Consider conservation on the land where you live.  Have a conversation with your neighbors about collaboration for conservation.  Learn what conservation resources are available through your county.  Become a member of a watershed organization where you live.  If your area doesn't have a watershed group, start one.  Advocate for conservation funding.  Support the farmers at the forefront of soil conservation.   CCCWC membership is free and open to all.

Book Packing January 31st
Happy New Year Volunteers,

Surprise! We are open for business through the winter now because our new home is HEATED! (In case you haven't visited us yet, it's also worth noting that we have 2 pristine bathrooms.)

This message is going out to all of our former volunteers and the organizations that regularly support us with group packings. To these organizations (e.g. Pres House, UW Physics, Baker Tilly, Promega, Epic, Rotaract Club), please think about setting a date for a group packing and contact me.

We have only 8-10 pallets left to reach our goal of 26-28 pallets for a truck load, so we can use all hands on deck! It's a great thing to do when it's so cold outside that we're getting cabin fever.

Please let me know if you can join us on Saturday, January 31 from 10-12 at 2109 Commercial Avenue.

Hope to see you soon,
Ellen Cook
