Welcome to December! Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
At our last meeting, we heard from Ross and Monique Hammond about the value of and the challenges of losing your hearing. Obviously, this would be life changing for anyone! It would affect your job, any future plans that you had, and your daily life/struggles. We did record the presentation so everyone could listen to it when it is convenient for them. The video can be accessed here - Hearing Loss Presentation 12-2-2022
Book Club - Does anyone have any interest in starting a book club?!?! I know a couple of people that would enjoy it. Reach out and let me know if you want to join! Open to anyone. A fun way to connect with other club members!
Movie night - On Dec 11, 2022, we will be doing our 1st Movie Night with the club! We plan to share a link to a movie so we can all watch the movie together and chat reactions during the movie! And share the experience! I think this will be fun! Join us! More the merrier! Send me an email and I will share the link to the event.
Happy hour - Dec 20, 2022, at 6pm. We will be getting together to catch up with each other, have a glass of beer/wine, and play a new game! This time it is going to be Scattergories! Each happy hour will be a different game - feel free to join us to share some laughter and show off your knowledge! The link is posted on our club website.
Also, nominations are still open for next year's Club President! If you want to get more involved, let me know. We want to hear from you!
Great news! We've kicked off our first official service project, a fundraising appeal to benefit patients of Family Health La Clinica by providing critical blood glucose monitors and boxes of testing strips. You should have already received your invitation to join in making this first project a successful one. Our hope is that every member of Changemakers Rotary will support this effort with a gift. Every member participation will be critical in encouraging others to contribute as well. Indeed, we've already begun to receive Changemakers' gifts through Venmo and mail.
In a week, we'll send the appeal materials to the Rotary clubs in the FHLC 10 county service area. And after that we'll provide appeal letters for you to use in your network of Rotary clubs, Rotarians and others you feel might have a heart for this service.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to provide enough monitors and test strips for 35 patients for a year. This is lifesaving stuff, fellow Changemakers! Let's do it! Make a difference in our world!
International Project
We've had several conversations with a group of Roteractors from Morocco, and in response to their request, we've provided them with a template for grant applications for funding for their dream of Cleaning up the Wadi.. As a group of young adults with little experience in obtaining the grants to do big projects, they are grappling with understanding the requirements that funding agencies might ask of them. John Locke is the contact person for the group, as we stand ready to walk with them to achieve their dreams.
If you have ideas about a service project that we could participate in, or collaborate with another club(s) in accomplishing, please feel free to forward those ideas to Cheryl, LeRoy, Peter or John. We want to show the world what a virtual Rotary Club can do, working together.
We (meaning Betsy and I) are putting forth a date for a social event and that date is Friday, December 9 at 6pm at my house:
15 Kewaunee Court, Madison, WI 53705
We ask that you please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We will have some beverages, but if you want anything specific, please bring.
My house has an open design, so social distancing is possible.
You can RSVP directly to me by responding to this email. I'm apologizing in advance if this date doesn't work out for some of you, but that's the nature of the holidays and busy people!
The Fitchrona Horizons Club is spearheading what they would like to be a Madison-wide mini fundraiser. The Green Bay Packers are doubling gifts, up to $250,000 through the end of the year, to the building campaign for the new Center for Black Excellence. The Center, with plans to open in late 2023, will foster Black excellence in the Madison community, with areas of focus to include health and wellness, leadership and innovation, performing and visual arts, and youth and families.
Fitchrona Horizons is asking that our Madison-area clubs come together during this last month of the year and make a donation together. Some possibilities would be to pledge your Q4 or December happy/sad dollars to the cause, or to make a special ask at your December meetings. Remember, all dollars will be doubled by the Packers! It's a 2-for-1 deal!
Thank you for your service,
Erin Luken

Description: A trip to Guatemala next year to get to know our fellow Rotarians and their families, do service projects, see the sights and have some fun!
As many of you know, we are planning a trip to Guatemala next year to get to know our fellow Rotarians and their families, do service projects, see the sights and have some fun! Gary and Ana and I met with Alvaro and Patrick over zoom last week and together we planned a tentative itinerary for January 12-22 that Patrick has attached here. Patrick has included a breakdown of the cost per person for the amazing trip he has planned for us that you'll find at the end of the attached itinerary. We priced air travel costs at around $500/person, but obviously that can vary. Please look over the itinerary carefully because there are lots of options included to facilitate designing your trip for your comfort level. What we would like to know at this planning stage is how many of you feel interested in going on this trip. No commitment required just yet
